  • Siding

The Outer Banks is unique in many ways; one thing being the weather. Persistent winds and driving rains are a distinguishing feature of our coastal environment. These conditions test the life of all exposed exterior products and your siding is your first line of defense. Traditional cedar lap siding, even maintained in the upmost fashion, with frequent repaint and caulking maintenance, has a life expectancy of 15-20 years. We at Macko Construction, set ourselves apart from other re-siders by following a stringent set of procedures before we install the 1st new piece of siding. During our 20 year history, we have developed flashing and siding techniques that go the extra step to ensure layers of protection. We are unique in offering a drainage system option installed between siding and felt layers that aid in keeping water from getting to the substrate of your home and also allows your home to breathe and keep dry. We promote the use of fiber cement siding products from James Hardie. They provide superior performance, resist rot and decay, and termites have no appetite for them. Additionally they come in a variety of prefinished colors that shouldn’t need to be repainted for 15 years or more and are backed by superior warranties. We also use composite trim for windows, door openings and soffit overhangs and eaves. Our crews follow our window installation procedure with custom pan flashing. Our use of copper deck flashing in conjunction with “Perma Barrier” membrane leaves you with the confidence knowing that your home is as water tight as it can get. We are the only company, which we are aware of who utilize this technology in our siding and building projects. Although these may be little things, this is what separates us from the rest of the contractors in the Outer Banks.

  • Decks & Walkways

There are a variety of deck options available today that make the deck areas you use to relax or entertain on much more inviting. In the past, many people only used treated lumber for their decks and that is still an option today, but with advancements in products we have more options available to make those spaces even better. There are several manufacturers that make composite decking materials from companies such as Azek and Trex to name a couple. There are many color options and different fastening techniques to satisfy everyone. So whether you decide to use #1 premium Super Deck treated wood or a composite material on your decks, we can make that space you have for relaxation or entertaining the beautiful deck you’ve always dreamed of. Another option available is a traffic grade urethane waterproof coating that can be used to accommodate living space underneath. This has become more and more popular since the change in CAMA rules that does not allow some structures to enclose underneath their homes. This also can help if your home is at maximum lot coverage, you could still add another bedroom or recreation room by enclosing an area where there is currently a deck. To coincide with the composite decks and waterproof coatings, we have composite handrail systems from Trex and Tamko. We use composite deck rails instead of vinyl because the vinyl rails squeak when you move them and are not very strong. The composite rails are quiet when moved and much stronger than vinyl. There is no need for steel inserts (that will rust) inside the handrails to strengthen the rails like the vinyl manufacturers need to use. There are 3 or 4 color options available as well as colonial or coastal balustrades to compliment any home on the Outer Banks.

  • Hurricane Shutters

Macko Construction was one of the pioneers of installing storm protection on the Outer Banks since 1988. We have (2) products to choose from, with (2) considerably different price points. There are rolling storm shutters from QMI in six different colors or extruded aluminum storm panels from Eastern Metals. The rolling storm shutters we use today are on the cutting edge of technology. QMI's new AL7-E extruded aluminum slats are the best hurricane protection that you can get. All of these shutters pass the flying debris and windborne debris code for the Outer Banks. Each slat is comprised of a male and a female end so that each slat is locked in place and cannot pull apart. At the end of each slat is a stainless steel screw with a nylon bushing that allows us to have the highest rated shutters on the Outer Banks. This also allows us to make a shutter up to 19' wide without the use of any storm bars that would impede your views of the ocean or sound. No one on the Outer Banks utilizes this technology. Our competition still use slats that we stopped using years ago. The advantage to this product is that you do not have to drill thru the house to install an operator that you have to hook a pole to and crank down. Our shutter can be pulled down just like a garage door and there is no need to drill through the house. That is one less place for water to get in to the house. We also have the availability of Smart Drive technology, which offers low voltage operation. No need to run ugly electrical wires on the inside or outside walls. You also need not worry about the electricity going out. It works off a battery pack. Two things that also set us apart from others is the care we use in padding out the shutters with solid 1x4 PVC material, and installation of a 45 degree Kant strip on top of the shutter boxes to shed water off, as not to allow water to get behind the top of the shutter. These shutters can be seen at Quality Manufacturing's website at www.qmiusa.com. There are many pictures there that you can view to see what these units might look like on your home.
